Painters are finished – for now!

So our favorite painter and his helper finished caulking and spackling and painting all of the molding, touching up around the windows and doors, finishing up the walls where there were spots and then putting another coat on the ceiling where it needed it – especially in the kitchen where it just looked like crap no matter the fact that DB had already charged me for 3 coats on it.

I will have to call the painter back when the bathroom and floors are done – and I think, from what he was saying, that I will get a deal if I also make him a batch of my double chocolate chunk cookies that he liked so much when he painted Mom’s house! ūüėČ

We are almost there! I swear we are!

The tile is in the house, in boxes, but it’s in the house (for the bathroom):

I have also ordered tile for the backsplash and fireplace but the backsplash tile is backordered until next Friday. I decided against my idea to really wait until I’m in – after spending all of that money on ordering samples and staring at them, I decided to just wing it. I went to two local tile stores, the first of which was a definite no. Don’t get me wrong – they had a decent selection, prices were not bad, but they were, on average, $2.00 more a square foot than the second store, which is the same place I bought the tile for the den/laundry floors. Store No. 1’s biggest downfall was that I showed the sales lady the samples I had ordered, described to her what I was leaning towards and she then took that info (short list – marble, or a glass/stone blend, or a glass subway tile with a hint of blue/green) and said, “I really think this would be what you’re looking for” – and it was a 1/2″ by 2″ staggered pattern of a textured glass tile, tinted like a purple with a mica effect causing it to emit a rainbow of fruit flavors when the light hit it right.

And I said, “That’s not anything like what I was describing.”

And she said, “Well maybe it’s a bit much for a kitchen.”

And I was thinking, “You think? And where would you think it wasn’t too much?”

After that obvious clash in taste or whatever you want to call it, I went back to the place where I bought the floor tiles for the den and laundry rooms. Coincidentally or maybe it was a sign or fate or whatever – but I had, in my head, kind of settled on a marbley backsplash and had seen a pattern I liked that I saved on the iPad – but I thought it was too white. Store 2 had the exact pattern in a different marble that has more gray in it and it was slightly under $15/sf which is what I had decided I would be willing to pay for the backsplash. They also had a different pattern out of the same stone that I chose for the fireplace. I hope this ends up looking wonderful! I’m just SOOOOOOO happy that I am pretty much done making big decisions!

There really has been progress…

The new guys have several jobs going on at one time so there have been some lulls. However, later this week the bathroom will be back underway which is very exciting! The painters started today and they are caulking and spackling and getting ready to paint all of the new molding and touching up the walls where they have already been spackled and patched. Mr. White, our favorite painter, is also doing a job in town at the same time so he will take longer than the two days it took him to paint Mom’s whole downstairs – he is fast AND good!

Today I finally settled on a backsplash for the kitchen and tile for the fireplace surround and ordered both. I really hope I’m happy with my choices – of course they aren’t anything I had samples for – well, not really. They are both similar but different shapes/patterns. I hope to be able to post installation pictures in a week! We may have to wait until after the floors are done – and the floor guys start on August 13! That’s also my “second birthday” – i.e. the day my parents brought me home from the orphanage or foster home or, as Dad always said, some creepy basement where they kept kids underneath the Children’s Bureau building in Columbia – so maybe it’s a sign.

Back to the tile – once again I deviated from my original intention – but I had been deviating from my first choices the past couple of weeks and focusing on marble. It maybe a little boring but it does leave me with a finished product that I can easily accent with color – as opposed to, say, the subway tiles in glass in a green/blue color that may not work out so well if I decide to paint my cabinets purple in a few years. I’m not saying I will, but I might. You just never know!

New Roof!!!!!

I think it took one day!¬† One Day!¬† And I saved $1500!¬† ONE DAY and MINUS MONEY.¬† It’s just freaking amazing.¬† And don’t ask my brother about the problems with his house that were caused by the same person.¬† I told him to make a list and he promptly made one verbally with lots of hand gestures.

Anyway, here is a picture –

I hope to get a better picture up once Photobucket quits screwing around and gets back to business – I can’t get a decent picture up until then!¬† But I will say that the roof looks great.¬† All of the extra stuff they had to do to make up for the crappy other stuff didn’t cost that much more and now it looks good.

Bathroom progress!

Well, I have new plumbing!¬† And the toilet that was practically touching the wall?¬† Gone!¬† Let’s see what’s been going on this week!

Photobucket

Where did the tub and toilet go?

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

And they put the new vanity together but it’s still in the other room waiting on installation:

Photobucket

Now, what was that water stain on that picture a couple up?¬† Well, I got a call the other day about a leak.¬† I assumed it was a leak in the roof since there really is no roof.¬† DB extended the room and added on a porch and then pissed around on actually putting a roof up.¬†¬†I’m still waiting on the now new roof guys who are saving me over $1500 to get over to the house but the rain keeps putting them off.¬† They actually moved me up in front of people because of the leak but I asked them to please just come and put a tarp over it since I would hate to have somebody else deal with leaks longer when I am not even in the house yet.

Whatever.¬† It leaks.¬† It leaks in the light fixture in the bathroom.¬† It leaks on the porch.¬†¬† But that other leak?¬† The one on the drywall?¬† Nope.¬†¬†Nothing to do with the roof.¬† That, my friends, is from the AC.¬† Not from the work that my AC guys did when they installed¬†heating & air in the house.¬† Nope.¬† That’s from when DB got his panties in a wad that my AC guys¬†put the pipe in a closet and said he had to move it.¬† So he moved it.¬† Then my new contractor says that the wrong glue was used on the PVC pipe and that very pipe leaked.¬† A lot.¬† The new guys¬†took pictures of the problems to¬†email to their guy in the office.¬†¬† So that pissed me off.¬† Again.¬† I did read before all of this started that it was advisable to start a blog about your renovations because it is helpful to have a place to vent.¬† I need three blogs.

Next step is to get the new guys to give me a date that I can at least have to schedule the floor guys to come in.¬† Apparently, this economy isn’t that bad.¬† Everyone I’ve talked to (roofing/flooring/general construction)¬†has multiple jobs going on and is booking weeks in advance.¬† Which is great, but I need to start booking now!¬† We need this done!

Backsplash decision…

I ordered a crap-load of tile samples from online shops to “live with” for a while.¬† The samples cost $2.50 each but I figured a local tile shop wouldn’t be too happy with my taking all of their samples for six months to figure out which one I want to buy.¬† At least this way, I can stare at them for months on end and not feel guilty.¬† I figure once I narrow it down again, to a few samples, I can take them to the local shop to see if they have them or something similar and for what price.¬†¬†With all of the samples that I have ordered, the niece and I are planning to tile a table or two – at least one for the front porch, we think, then depending on how much tile is left after that, we may do another one for the deck or for inside the house.¬† If we are good at it, we may open up an Etsy shop or something.¬† (Don’t hold your breath on that one.)

Anyway, here are the finalists. Feel free to comment, email, call, scream into the night how awful something is. You know, let me know. I hope to at least have the happy hour crew over once the bathroom is functional to look at this stuff in person but with only the porch wicker loveseat over there, we would have to stand up the whole time and we like to sit when we are drinking – not sure about the rest of you. ūüôā

So here are the finalists:

1. This is a 3/8 in. wide tile blend – with white glass tile (frosted and other) and stainless steel in varying lengths and shades.

Photobucket

2. This is carrara marble (or a copy) and gray tile blend

Photobucket

3. This is a white/clear/frosted/marble blend

Photobucket

4. Blue/green glass tile blend

Photobucket

5. Dark and light marble blend – I think it has bardiglio in the name

Photobucket

6. This is a blend of white/blue/gray. Not sure how much I really like the white tiles but if I could find a similar blend with clear and frosted white instead of sparkly white, I think I would snap it up.

Photobucket

7 & 8. The one on the left comes in different sizes and is a gray/white blend, glass, with frosted/matte/”clear” tiles. The one on the right is a gray/white marble blend, similar to Ann Sacks matchsticks but cheaper.

Photobucket

9. Carrara marble 1×2 sheet

Photobucket

10.¬† Glass subway tile – 3×6 – not sure I love this particular color, but they come in all colors and I do like the glass tile and the size…

Well, I keep trying to crop and post the picture of that tile but can’t for some reason – it’s in the “testing area” photo – I will try to post a close up later.

The testing area:

Photobucket

I am also planning that one of these samples will be used around the fireplace. There is enough Caesarstone left from the counters to use for the hearth/floor part of the fireplace. The surround I am thinking needs to be marble-ish and maybe paint the mantle something other than white.  The appliances have been ordered Рnot sure when there will be appliances in the house, or when the guys can find the wires that are allegedly in the walls for the appliances, but we are making progress nonetheless!

Get ready for a bathroom!

Hopefully there will be a new bathroom next week!¬† The past couple of weeks have consisted of the crew stopping by every day in between jobs to patch the drywall where there were gaping holes left around the newly installed windows, then sanding/mudding those patches, plus sanding/mudding the ceiling and walls in spots that looked like crap, PLUS fixing the wall behind the fireplace.¬† They come, they work, they leave for the next job.¬† Labor costs are kept at a minimum.¬† Got the bill for all of that plus the tile, plus the trim and it’s like I’m just making money now!¬† Amazing!¬† Plus I get to mail off my rebate forms for the appliances today¬†– more money in my pocket! (Or at least a Visa gift card in eight to ten weeks)

Cabinets finished!

The right parts came in to finish them a few weeks ago and were installed yesterday after the counters – it’s so exciting!¬† All these movable parts and soft-close drawers and secret compartments!

Photobucket

Photobucket

And the cabinet molding is all done!

Photobucket

Waiting on first estimate for finishing the floors since that job was abandoned halfway through, contract be damned. If I can remember, I’ll call another company about those tomorrow to see about an estimate. Meanwhile, I think it’s back to writing checks tomorrow – at least for the counters – and that means I get to check on the possibility of using leftover materials for the fireplace. The new guy said I don’t have to pay him anything until the work is done! We are meeting up tomorrow to go over the bathroom plans, I hope, though, plus my “other list”.

Meanwhile, there’s a rip in a screen that I’ve been eyeing for a couple months that has been pissing me off since it’s a brand new window –¬†plus some vinyl siding that’s gone wonky that I’ve been eyeing for a week now. I’ll photograph those tomorrow.

I have now ordered all of the appliances that are tentatively scheduled to be delivered on July 4 – now since I know that’s not going to happen, I’ll shoot for next Friday, July 6. That’s exciting, though!¬† What is probably most exciting about that is that I don’t have to continually research appliances and scour Consumer Reports every day!

More progress on the house!

The tile was grouted and some of the trim put up in that room.  Doors were hung Рis that like hanging a person and it should be hanged?  No, probably just hung.  Anyway, drywall was patched around the windows where there were gaping ugly holes.  The ceiling was patched where it needed it and the fireplace was mended where the mantle was trying to run away from the wall!  Plus, some finishing touches were made to the step from the dining room to the den whereas before the hardwood just stopped and fell off into the next room and the doorway there was finished off.  Just a lot of stuff for a Friday!

Photobucket

Shh – don’t tell the guys that the toy poodle pranced around on the tile while it is drying!¬† Certainly a 12 pound dog won’t ruin it!¬† If so, I suppose I assumed that risk, huh?

Shock and Awe: A New Application

I am now applying this phrase to my reaction to the work done at the house in the past two days.¬† Somehow, some way, a whole shit-load of stuff was accomplished all the while I was saving money.¬†¬† I was, of course, most in awe of the counters that were installed, just because I’ve been waiting on those to be shipped here for a really long time.¬† The molding was installed everywhere but the bathroom and den and the tile was laid in the den with grouting to be done tomorrow, I believe.¬† I was so busy getting pictures of the counters and tile that I neglected to get pics of the molding but you can see at least the crown molding in the kitchen pictures.¬† I honestly don’t know how these guys got all of this stuff finished so quickly based on the timeframes I was used to before.¬† Plus, old-timey drywall tape?¬† Apparently useless and creates more work while giving a less than stellar finished product.¬† My brother told me that a few months ago, but I just chose to not listen to him.¬† I was told that twice today by two different people. Let me move on – at least for this post. And now that the tile’s being done, I can’t even go into that closet to stare at the little square holes of that crappy drywall tape, so I can pretend it’s not there. Ha.

On the bright side:

Back to work!

Well, scheduling problems have started to dissipate with the new guys.¬† They are starting today I think, but I haven’t been down to check yet.¬† I had to get the nephew to camp and now have to try to get the niece up and running!

The counters were polished yesterday and are being installed tomorrow!  Hopefully I will have some pictures soon!

Meanwhile, the savings meter is running and is up, up, up.¬† I am not going to post the actual number that goes before the 3 zeros that I have saved so far in case some of the new guys see and decide to gouge me!¬† ūüôā

The niece painted some drywall patching yesterday from where the light switches had to be moved to the “right” side of the door since the door that the last guy ordered opened the opposite way from the light switches that he put in and mudded¬†already.¬† Wait, have I complained about creating work to do before?¬† Probably.¬† Anyway, on the downside, that was more $ for more mudding and patching.¬† On the upside, the niece gets to say she painted.

The nephew pounded in the stand for the mailbox and now I think we put it too close to the street.¬† Maybe we’ll¬†catch the mail lady today and get her to tell us if it is in a good spot.¬† That will make her happy since she is going crazy with nowhere to put all of the mail addressed to Resident.
