Kitchen

Almost finished!

With the exception of the kitchen – still have a problem with the installation of the dishwasher but hopefully that will be fixed soon!  Plus, the logs are installed but the – I’m not sure what you call it – deflector, maybe? – still has to be put in so that the mantel doesn’t get so hot.   All in all, though, I am almost there.  Now to move the rest of my stuff in!  Since I am almost all done (deadline Christmas, which means the second week of January), I tried to take some pictures to compare to the original pictures and here they are:

Front of the house – no need to repost the “old” picture since it is the masthead…:

Bathroom – after extending it about 3 feet because it was beyond claustrophobic before:

The living room – there are a couple of angles here and the Christmas tree did force me to move around what is normally in the “picture window” but hey, it’s Christmas! I made a couple of comments about getting a 3 or 4 foot tree and my sister-in-law went crazy about my not-even-here-yet Charlie Brown Christmas tree so I just got a big one. 🙂

Ack – wrong angle!

Backsplash! Plus furniture and bathroom progress!

Remember this?

Photobucket

Sometimes I have to go back and look at the old pictures just to make sure I am making progress!

Here is the kitchen today – no grout yet, but the backsplash is up!  I LOVE it!

I couldn’t take pictures of the bathroom because the painters were in there but the NG took down the molding that was there that I didn’t like and put up more and it looks really good. The cabinet doors are also up and painted. I will get some pictures soon!

No updates for a while but we are getting there.

Last week, I went to the tile store where they have my leftover countertop and gave them the dimensions to cut and polish the piece for the hearth of the fireplace.  I got a call back that it was one inch shorter than the depth I requested.  Crap.  I went back and remeasured – that one inch was extra so the shorter width will be fine!  Whew!  That piece should be ready next week.

The guys started on the backsplash Friday – well, they did the wiring for the undercabinet lighting, anyway, and cut out the drywall back there to (I am assuming) (1) install the wires and (2) because it was so lumpy and crappy looking they needed a flat surface so the tile would lay flat. Not sure what OF was planning to do with that lumpy mess of shit, but hey, I’m sure he would have rigged up something shitty that would have worked. I am also not sure how OF was planning on installing any of the undercounter lighting since the new guys have had to remove all of the insulation that I had put in the entire house, but saved it to replace it, I suppose.

The painter is coming back in the a.m. to tell me how much paint and primer I need to get for the bathroom. He will get that knocked out in a couple of days, maybe three, I hope, and then they can install the toilet and vanity! I am trying to decide on a color for the bathroom and put up a couple of shades from some samples but haven’t decided and forgot to take a picture.

I did take a picture of the fireplace – I want to go with a color other than white for the mantel – these are both gray, but one is a lot darker. I’m just going to have to wait until the hearth and tile are in to make a decision, I think.

I put the guest bed together this weekend. The instructions from Ikea made a sad face on the cartoon trying to put it together by himself and a happy face when he/it had a friend. I did it by myself so suck it, Ikea! Again, no picture – not yet!

P.S.  Guess who is skipping town?  It’s not me!

Backsplash decision…

I ordered a crap-load of tile samples from online shops to “live with” for a while.  The samples cost $2.50 each but I figured a local tile shop wouldn’t be too happy with my taking all of their samples for six months to figure out which one I want to buy.  At least this way, I can stare at them for months on end and not feel guilty.  I figure once I narrow it down again, to a few samples, I can take them to the local shop to see if they have them or something similar and for what price.  With all of the samples that I have ordered, the niece and I are planning to tile a table or two – at least one for the front porch, we think, then depending on how much tile is left after that, we may do another one for the deck or for inside the house.  If we are good at it, we may open up an Etsy shop or something.  (Don’t hold your breath on that one.)

Anyway, here are the finalists. Feel free to comment, email, call, scream into the night how awful something is. You know, let me know. I hope to at least have the happy hour crew over once the bathroom is functional to look at this stuff in person but with only the porch wicker loveseat over there, we would have to stand up the whole time and we like to sit when we are drinking – not sure about the rest of you. 🙂

So here are the finalists:

1. This is a 3/8 in. wide tile blend – with white glass tile (frosted and other) and stainless steel in varying lengths and shades.

Photobucket

2. This is carrara marble (or a copy) and gray tile blend

Photobucket

3. This is a white/clear/frosted/marble blend

Photobucket

4. Blue/green glass tile blend

Photobucket

5. Dark and light marble blend – I think it has bardiglio in the name

Photobucket

6. This is a blend of white/blue/gray. Not sure how much I really like the white tiles but if I could find a similar blend with clear and frosted white instead of sparkly white, I think I would snap it up.

Photobucket

7 & 8. The one on the left comes in different sizes and is a gray/white blend, glass, with frosted/matte/”clear” tiles. The one on the right is a gray/white marble blend, similar to Ann Sacks matchsticks but cheaper.

Photobucket

9. Carrara marble 1×2 sheet

Photobucket

10.  Glass subway tile – 3×6 – not sure I love this particular color, but they come in all colors and I do like the glass tile and the size…

Well, I keep trying to crop and post the picture of that tile but can’t for some reason – it’s in the “testing area” photo – I will try to post a close up later.

The testing area:

I am also planning that one of these samples will be used around the fireplace. There is enough Caesarstone left from the counters to use for the hearth/floor part of the fireplace. The surround I am thinking needs to be marble-ish and maybe paint the mantle something other than white.  The appliances have been ordered – not sure when there will be appliances in the house, or when the guys can find the wires that are allegedly in the walls for the appliances, but we are making progress nonetheless!

Cabinets finished!

The right parts came in to finish them a few weeks ago and were installed yesterday after the counters – it’s so exciting!  All these movable parts and soft-close drawers and secret compartments!

Photobucket

Photobucket

And the cabinet molding is all done!

Photobucket

Waiting on first estimate for finishing the floors since that job was abandoned halfway through, contract be damned. If I can remember, I’ll call another company about those tomorrow to see about an estimate. Meanwhile, I think it’s back to writing checks tomorrow – at least for the counters – and that means I get to check on the possibility of using leftover materials for the fireplace. The new guy said I don’t have to pay him anything until the work is done! We are meeting up tomorrow to go over the bathroom plans, I hope, though, plus my “other list”.

Meanwhile, there’s a rip in a screen that I’ve been eyeing for a couple months that has been pissing me off since it’s a brand new window – plus some vinyl siding that’s gone wonky that I’ve been eyeing for a week now. I’ll photograph those tomorrow.

I have now ordered all of the appliances that are tentatively scheduled to be delivered on July 4 – now since I know that’s not going to happen, I’ll shoot for next Friday, July 6. That’s exciting, though!  What is probably most exciting about that is that I don’t have to continually research appliances and scour Consumer Reports every day!

Shock and Awe: A New Application

I am now applying this phrase to my reaction to the work done at the house in the past two days.  Somehow, some way, a whole shit-load of stuff was accomplished all the while I was saving money.   I was, of course, most in awe of the counters that were installed, just because I’ve been waiting on those to be shipped here for a really long time.  The molding was installed everywhere but the bathroom and den and the tile was laid in the den with grouting to be done tomorrow, I believe.  I was so busy getting pictures of the counters and tile that I neglected to get pics of the molding but you can see at least the crown molding in the kitchen pictures.  I honestly don’t know how these guys got all of this stuff finished so quickly based on the timeframes I was used to before.  Plus, old-timey drywall tape?  Apparently useless and creates more work while giving a less than stellar finished product.  My brother told me that a few months ago, but I just chose to not listen to him.  I was told that twice today by two different people. Let me move on – at least for this post. And now that the tile’s being done, I can’t even go into that closet to stare at the little square holes of that crappy drywall tape, so I can pretend it’s not there. Ha.

On the bright side:

More progress on the kitchen and I painted the front door…

NF did run into a few problems with the cabinets – mostly stemming from the fact that the company sent us the wrong piece for one thing and didn’t send some of the slide-out shelves for the pantry, then we needed one more piece of crown molding to finish up so all of that has been ordered/re-ordered and he can finish up then. He may have also left the crayon that you use to fill in the nail holes in the molding in his truck and it may have melted so he may have had to order another one of those, too. AND his assistant may have screwed up putting the drawer pull on the trashcan drawer so that door may have been re-ordered, too. But once all of that comes in, it will be finished! It looks great!

The front door has two coats of paint on it so far and I know it needs at least one more, if not two. However, it is NOT the color of the paint swatch that is on my ring of paint swatches. I picked a dark red and this was looking really pink. After the second coat, I still think it looks a little pink up close, but hopefully after I finish it off with another coat or two, it will look like the right color!

omg, omg, omg! Kitchen cabinets!!!

DB went on vacation for the week.  Before he left, we had our second “come to Jesus” meeting.  The first one took place the day I had to pay the mf’ing IRS and SC Dept of Revenue way more money than I had expected PLUS estimated quarterlies for this year which, of course, eats into my house budget.  If you know me, you know that I will usually only afford people one of these “meetings”.  Some people I don’t even allow the one.  Occasionally I will allow two.

I now have NF installing the kitchen cabinets while DB is vacationing. Apparently you really can accomplish a lot in one day. ONE DAY.

(Plus Mom and I painted the two bedrooms and hall the other day and painted the den today!)

To draw out the excitement of the cabinets, I’ll post the painting pics first:

And here’s the kitchen!

Exciting!!!!!!!!!!!!

If all works out, we’ll knock out some more painting tomorrow and this weekend and may be finished (except for the bathroom and impending touchups)!

DB gets back from vacation in a few days.  I’m sure he’ll have something to say about NF’s work – but I’m telling you, it looks great!

Glass block has been installed in the bathroom!

Of course it’s not where I told him to put it – it is exactly where he said he wanted to put it but I said to put it higher up so that even with the shower curtain closed, the top of the window would show and put out natural light into the rest of the bathroom.  He put it exactly where he wanted to anyway.  Who is in charge here?  I am glad he wasn’t there when I discovered this because he would have been subjected to a barrage of comments I would be willing to bet he has never heard, even considering he works construction.

Here are pictures of the window:

The kitchen cabinets will be installed next week and I think Mom and I will try to paint some, too. I hope we can knock out the bedrooms but I will settle for even just one and the rest of the kitchen/dining room! I don’t think that we can even try the living room until the cabinets are out of there. Dammit.

I found a squatter!

To be fair, I don’t think he/she was a willing squatter.

About this time, the bird finally figured out that I had opened a window – just a different one so the bird didn’t peck me – and flew out of it.

Now back to business! Yesterday, Mom and I painted the kitchen – well the parts that won’t be covered by cabinets so it looks shoddy but it’s really not.
