Bedroom 1

Painters are finished – for now!

So our favorite painter and his helper finished caulking and spackling and painting all of the molding, touching up around the windows and doors, finishing up the walls where there were spots and then putting another coat on the ceiling where it needed it – especially in the kitchen where it just looked like crap no matter the fact that DB had already charged me for 3 coats on it.

I will have to call the painter back when the bathroom and floors are done – and I think, from what he was saying, that I will get a deal if I also make him a batch of my double chocolate chunk cookies that he liked so much when he painted Mom’s house! ūüėČ

We are almost there! I swear we are!

The tile is in the house, in boxes, but it’s in the house (for the bathroom):

Photobucket

I have also ordered tile for the backsplash and fireplace but the backsplash tile is backordered until next Friday. I decided against my idea to really wait until I’m in – after spending all of that money on ordering samples and staring at them, I decided to just wing it. I went to two local tile stores, the first of which was a definite no. Don’t get me wrong – they had a decent selection, prices were not bad, but they were, on average, $2.00 more a square foot than the second store, which is the same place I bought the tile for the den/laundry floors. Store No. 1’s biggest downfall was that I showed the sales lady the samples I had ordered, described to her what I was leaning towards and she then took that info (short list – marble, or a glass/stone blend, or a glass subway tile with a hint of blue/green) and said, “I really think this would be what you’re looking for” – and it was a 1/2″ by 2″ staggered pattern of a textured glass tile, tinted like a purple with a mica effect causing it to emit a rainbow of fruit flavors when the light hit it right.

And I said, “That’s not anything like what I was describing.”

And she said, “Well maybe it’s a bit much for a kitchen.”

And I was thinking, “You think? And where would you think it wasn’t too much?”

After that obvious clash in taste or whatever you want to call it, I went back to the place where I bought the floor tiles for the den and laundry rooms. Coincidentally or maybe it was a sign or fate or whatever – but I had, in my head, kind of settled on a marbley backsplash and had seen a pattern I liked that I saved on the iPad – but I thought it was too white. Store 2 had the exact pattern in a different marble that has more gray in it and it was slightly under $15/sf which is what I had decided I would be willing to pay for the backsplash. They also had a different pattern out of the same stone that I chose for the fireplace. I hope this ends up looking wonderful! I’m just SOOOOOOO happy that I am pretty much done making big decisions!

Someone’s vacation week is coming to an end – let’s review what we’ve accomplished…

What have we accomplished while¬†DB was on vacation? We’ve painted the entire house, less some touch ups that need to be done. “We’ve” meaning Alan has put up 4 ceiling fans and two light fixtures on his birthday, no less, so kudos to my brother. And if you’re wondering if I paid him anything, I did buy the niece $60 worth of shorts for the summer so we are counting that as payment. We all win. Oh, also kudos to the s-nephew who was an awesome helper today – aside from his constant practical jokes, he was a trooper and didn’t complain unlike the nephew who would have bitched the entire day about having to do work. Plus, kudos to the s-niece who helped paint today.¬† I’m a-scared to tell the niece that all the painting is done since she threatened her grandmaw with violence if we didn’t let her paint.¬† Sorry!

omg, omg, omg! Kitchen cabinets!!!

DB went on vacation for the week.¬† Before he left, we had our second “come to Jesus” meeting.¬† The first one took place the day I had to pay the mf’ing IRS and SC Dept of Revenue way more money than I had expected PLUS estimated quarterlies for this year which, of course, eats into my house budget.¬† If you know me, you know that I will usually only afford people one of these “meetings”.¬† Some people I don’t even allow the one.¬† Occasionally I will allow two.

I now have NF installing the kitchen cabinets while DB is vacationing. Apparently you really can accomplish a lot in one day. ONE DAY.

(Plus Mom and I painted the two bedrooms and hall the other day and painted the den today!)

To draw out the excitement of the cabinets, I’ll post the painting pics first:

And here’s the kitchen!

Photobucket

Photobucket

Exciting!!!!!!!!!!!!

If all works out, we’ll knock out some more painting tomorrow and this weekend and may be finished (except for the bathroom and impending touchups)!

DB¬†gets back from vacation in a few days.¬† I’m sure he’ll have something to say about NF’s work – but I’m telling you, it looks great!

More progress on the siding and floors!

Photobucket

The last of the porch floor rubble has been put into buckets.

Photobucket

The hardwood floors are “done” in that they have all been put down. Next step, sanding!

And the light in the living room has been moved and the other one has been taken out so that they line up with the windows instead of willy-nilly across the ceiling.

Porch construction continues…

Plus a little progress on the floors inside.¬† Let’s take a look at the porch first:

Photobucket

The damaged floor in the bigger bedroom has been taken up:

Photobucket

Photobucket

And prepping for the hall floor is in progress:

Photobucket

My mom and my brother believe that the board in the roof of the porch means that someone – not me – is planning on putting the fan dead center in the ceiling of the porch, which obviously wouldn’t make sense because¬†the seating area is to the right, centered underneath the big window. Why would you put the fan to the left of the seating area?

Update: That was the plan but it has been fixed – problem avoided.

Guess what went missing today?????

THAT NASTY CARPET!!!  And the hardwood floors look really good!  There are a few bad spots that will need to be replaced plus extend them into the kitchen, but they look even better than I thought they did when I peeked at them before!  NOW we are getting somewhere!

Photobucket

Front bedroom:

Photobucket

Back bedroom – just one spot where the window AC unit leaked:

Photobucket

The little entry wall that was removed:

Photobucket

Oh yeah, the old front door was removed so we could put up an energy efficient door that also opens the opposite way since the little wall was taken out – there’s the old one in the kitchen:

Photobucket

And they wrapped the house in preparation for the vinyl siding which should be here later this week:

Photobucket

The bathroom is coming along, too:

Bathroom demo is done and there is a bathtub on the front porch!

Of course Jennifer couldn’t wait to call me to tell me that there is a bathtub on the front porch since I took a picture of her toilet in her front yard back during her bathroom renovation!

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

And the bathroom still looks tiny even without the fixtures – well, the toilet is still in there, just for Kayleigh…

Photobucket

Photobucket

Primer has been sprayed in some rooms which makes them look like, well, rooms.

Photobucket

Photobucket

Kitchen picture below – the window facing the front has been walled in and we are just waiting on the final cabinet plan to replace the window with the bigger one:

Photobucket

And the pantry/laundry closet is coming along – the floor wasn’t exactly sturdy so that is being fixed. Kayleigh¬†is convinced this is bad – that someone is going to crawl into the house through the closet and murder someone. She swears she went to see The Lorax yesterday but I’m thinking it was a horror movie.¬† Just in case, I’m going to tell F to watch his back.

More demolition, more discoveries!

Now there’s some old termite damage in a little wall that we had discussed taking out before – the wall at the front door – it did seem uncomfortable that you walk into the house into that tiny cubby – if you want a foyer, do a foyer, not some sad, tiny excuse for a foyer, so maybe this has worked out for the best?¬† I don’t know – we’ll rule on that later. Either way, more walls have come down. So here are the updated pictures:

Bedroom 2 – bad sheetrock gone, good sheetrock put in to replace it:

Photobucket

Bedroom 1 – bad sheetrock gone, good sheetrock put in to replace it – plus the closet has lost its awful paneling.

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

And yet another kind of wallpaper!

Photobucket

Let’s go back to the front room/living room/entry way:

Photobucket

All of the walls are gone plus the ceiling!  I did decide to do away with the little wall, move the supporting beam up into the attic, then just make this one room which does away with my sectioning off the picture window area as either an area for a daybed or an area for a couple of armchairs and a table, but I will just have to adapt.

Photobucket

Back to the den/old porch/back room – here’s a view from the living room:

Photobucket

Closer view of the closet:

Photobucket

Now that they have removed the existing ceiling, we find out that we can raise the ceiling so taller people that may live here in the future could actually do their laundry without kneeling down! That’s a good thing!

Photobucket

The old AC unit has been taken out and the hole has been patched up:

Photobucket

I did decide to move the door to the laundry/pantry down and may be able to put the piano in that corner if this all works, which will be great, although with all the changes in the living room, I may have a spot there, but don’t let me get ahead of myself

A lot has been done, but I still can’t manage to decide on a kitchen cabinet door.¬† Or a kitchen floor.¬† Or a backsplash.¬† And I haven’t even talked to the contractor about the bathroom.¬† Or the deck.¬† My head hurts.¬† Wait – what am I doing about the front porch?¬† Shut up.¬† I’m going to bed!

We are hitting the point where I have no idea what’s going on.

I am literally losing sleep and when I do sleep I dream of cabinet choices, kitchen layouts and stabbing kitchen designers from various stores.¬† Well, maybe that last part was a little exaggerated, but still…

Here are the latest pictures:

Kayleigh says hey!

Photobucket

There actually is insulation in the former porch/now den walls – surprise, surprise!

Photobucket

There’s now drywall in the closet and the ceilings!

Photobucket

Photobucket

And this is what happens when you have a window AC unit that leaks into your walls for 492 years.

Photobucket

Gross!

And I really don’t know why we have removed all of this drywall from this wall:

Photobucket

Kayleigh and I biked/walked down there today with Lucy who marked her territory 9 times – NINE times – which is a phrase from Ferris Bueller, right? But Lucy really did – I was impressed. And irritated. But she’s still cute.

More demolition, more problems/discoveries!

The wall with the fake stained glass windows is down and now what to do with the electrical box that was hiding behind a piece of ugly fake wood paneling? The kitchen subfloor #1 is out and now the old plumbing for a possible old washing machine is being taken out. Plus, the damaged drywall is taken out where it was damaged under a window AC unit and we discover there has never been any insulation put in the exterior walls of the house. I made the mistake of researching this issue on the internet but will reserve judgment and public comment until the contractor weighs in on the matter.

First let’s check out the newly ripped out fake stained glass panel area with the ugly old wallpaper now really coming through.

Photobucket

Here we are up close and personal with the wallpaper – how is there at the VERY least four different wallpapers in this small area?

Photobucket

Photobucket

Here’s the electrical box hanging…

Photobucket

And this is the ceiling after the awful ceiling tiles were removed.

Photobucket

Photobucket

What is it with Lucy?¬† She can eat anything!¬† Including the fake rocks from the formerly gas fireplace, and any sort of trash from a demo’d wall!Photobucket
