Bathroom

Almost finished!

With the exception of the kitchen – still have a problem with the installation of the dishwasher but hopefully that will be fixed soon!  Plus, the logs are installed but the – I’m not sure what you call it – deflector, maybe? – still has to be put in so that the mantel doesn’t get so hot.   All in all, though, I am almost there.  Now to move the rest of my stuff in!  Since I am almost all done (deadline Christmas, which means the second week of January), I tried to take some pictures to compare to the original pictures and here they are:

Front of the house – no need to repost the “old” picture since it is the masthead…:

Bathroom – after extending it about 3 feet because it was beyond claustrophobic before:

The living room – there are a couple of angles here and the Christmas tree did force me to move around what is normally in the “picture window” but hey, it’s Christmas! I made a couple of comments about getting a 3 or 4 foot tree and my sister-in-law went crazy about my not-even-here-yet Charlie Brown Christmas tree so I just got a big one. 🙂

Ack – wrong angle!

Backsplash! Plus furniture and bathroom progress!

Remember this?

Photobucket

Sometimes I have to go back and look at the old pictures just to make sure I am making progress!

Here is the kitchen today – no grout yet, but the backsplash is up!  I LOVE it!

My sofa and chair are back from the upholsterer:

I couldn’t take pictures of the bathroom because the painters were in there but the NG took down the molding that was there that I didn’t like and put up more and it looks really good. The cabinet doors are also up and painted. I will get some pictures soon!

More bathroom progress and a nice surprise!

I called the new guys today to tell them that there was a problem with one of the tiles in the bathroom. Before I did that, though, I made Jennifer come over and look at the tile to make sure I wasn’t being ridiculous. Nope, she agreed, that would be the ONLY thing I would see when I went into the bathroom, and now that she knows it’s there, she would always see it, too. So, since I can’t have my friends coming over and staring at my wacky tile, I called. No problem, they’ll fix it. Will they charge me by the hour to fix their screw up like other people? Nope.

So, not only did they fix the tile, I also asked about the vanity and toilet. Since I got an open vanity, they think Mr. White needs to paint before it is installed. I agree but what about when the floor guys come? Doesn’t it need to be moved? They agreed. And, he adds, “They’re over there right now.” So today after work I expected to see beadboard up and the vanity and toilet at least sitting in the bathroom. I had already asked my sister-in-law about hiring the s-nephew this weekend to help me get the old toilet out, moving around the stuff that is on the floors and getting the paper up that is protecting the sanded floors, as well as vacuuming or sweeping. She said he would love to! Then I did go down the street after work and that’s when I found my surprise!

The s-nephew is out of a job because the new guys cleaned up everything! I may still sweep or take the vacuum down there, just so the floor guys have one less thing to do before they start.

P.S.  Somebody please clean the lens of my camera!  It is filthy and no matter what I do – spots!  Ugh!

Painters are finished – for now!

So our favorite painter and his helper finished caulking and spackling and painting all of the molding, touching up around the windows and doors, finishing up the walls where there were spots and then putting another coat on the ceiling where it needed it – especially in the kitchen where it just looked like crap no matter the fact that DB had already charged me for 3 coats on it.

I will have to call the painter back when the bathroom and floors are done – and I think, from what he was saying, that I will get a deal if I also make him a batch of my double chocolate chunk cookies that he liked so much when he painted Mom’s house! 😉

We are almost there! I swear we are!

The tile is in the house, in boxes, but it’s in the house (for the bathroom):

I have also ordered tile for the backsplash and fireplace but the backsplash tile is backordered until next Friday. I decided against my idea to really wait until I’m in – after spending all of that money on ordering samples and staring at them, I decided to just wing it. I went to two local tile stores, the first of which was a definite no. Don’t get me wrong – they had a decent selection, prices were not bad, but they were, on average, $2.00 more a square foot than the second store, which is the same place I bought the tile for the den/laundry floors. Store No. 1’s biggest downfall was that I showed the sales lady the samples I had ordered, described to her what I was leaning towards and she then took that info (short list – marble, or a glass/stone blend, or a glass subway tile with a hint of blue/green) and said, “I really think this would be what you’re looking for” – and it was a 1/2″ by 2″ staggered pattern of a textured glass tile, tinted like a purple with a mica effect causing it to emit a rainbow of fruit flavors when the light hit it right.

And I said, “That’s not anything like what I was describing.”

And she said, “Well maybe it’s a bit much for a kitchen.”

And I was thinking, “You think? And where would you think it wasn’t too much?”

After that obvious clash in taste or whatever you want to call it, I went back to the place where I bought the floor tiles for the den and laundry rooms. Coincidentally or maybe it was a sign or fate or whatever – but I had, in my head, kind of settled on a marbley backsplash and had seen a pattern I liked that I saved on the iPad – but I thought it was too white. Store 2 had the exact pattern in a different marble that has more gray in it and it was slightly under $15/sf which is what I had decided I would be willing to pay for the backsplash. They also had a different pattern out of the same stone that I chose for the fireplace. I hope this ends up looking wonderful! I’m just SOOOOOOO happy that I am pretty much done making big decisions!

Glass block has been installed in the bathroom!

Of course it’s not where I told him to put it – it is exactly where he said he wanted to put it but I said to put it higher up so that even with the shower curtain closed, the top of the window would show and put out natural light into the rest of the bathroom.  He put it exactly where he wanted to anyway.  Who is in charge here?  I am glad he wasn’t there when I discovered this because he would have been subjected to a barrage of comments I would be willing to bet he has never heard, even considering he works construction.

Here are pictures of the window:

The kitchen cabinets will be installed next week and I think Mom and I will try to paint some, too. I hope we can knock out the bedrooms but I will settle for even just one and the rest of the kitchen/dining room! I don’t think that we can even try the living room until the cabinets are out of there. Dammit.

Little by little…

The floors are still going in – due to the unevenness of the dining/kitchen floors, more had to be replaced so now we’ve run out and have to buy more – BUT we bought all of the hardwoods at the first lumber yard at the ridiculously (probably mistaken) cheap prices so now have to either wait a week and pay more from that place, or buy them right now and pay more from the other lumber yard. See how “pay more” is the repetitive phrase here?

My tub came in!

And I got Alan’s yard guys to take out two trees in the front yard – the tree that was halfway in the driveway that I told DB I needed to get rid of since I fully expected to hit it and rip off my rear view mirror in the near future and he replied with, “Oh, yeah, that one? I already hit it.” Then the other one I had them take out was in the front yard near the street and had about a 10 foot section that had nearly been knocked down by the wind storm the other night, but it was still hanging on by a thread, just waiting to fall and stab someone through the head so I figured it would be good to get that one out now. I inquired about cutting down some others, mainly the one outside the kitchen window, but that one apparently will require a crane and billions of dollars to remove. Well, maybe not billions, but I figure once DB and the crew are gone, I can get estimates from a bunch of people.

Photobucket

Here’s a close up of the guy in the tree:

Photobucket

He said the tree was rotten and hollow from about 50-60 feet and on up – he put his arm in the holes to prove it to me.

DB put up about three little pieces of the vinyl siding today so we could see it and I will get pictures of that and the porch progress Sunday afternoon. The kitchen cabinets are in and at the store just waiting to be installed!

Here’s my niece mugging for the camera in front of the boxes of siding:

The porch construction has begun!

Now it’s starting to look like something! Almost.

Photobucket

I believe we have a problem in the bathroom but I was told to just wait – that’s what I’m always told when I say there is a problem that we need to fix or do something different to avoid a problem. Since I’m always right, this ends up with either my backing down and accepting the washer and dryer in the exact wrong place – I have been told I said to put them in the “short corner” – actually, I asked how tall the “short corner” was since if the short corner is tall enough to accept them, the tall corner is definitely tall enough for a stackable washer and dryer.  The short corner was measured and is about 74 inches tall, meaning the tall corner is probably 80 inches tall, so the 36 inch tall w/d set will fit in either corner.  But the 38-inch tall set will only fit in the tall corner.  Most of them are 38 inches or taller.  It is hard to find a set that is 36 inches tall, each.  Now I can only buy one random Maytag washer and dryer.  They just have to last long enough for me to get tired of this place and leave and then someone else can move the w/d connections around in the closet.

Anyway, here’s the bathroom now:

My sister-in-law said today, “They’ll be finished by Christmas, right?” Does it look THAT hopeless???

The front porch demo is done… plus one attempt at sanding the floors is done

The front porch concrete demo is complete.

The floor in the hall has been torn out, along with the shelf that was a built-in feature in the hall. The heater vent is out, the heater, I believe, is gone, too.

Photobucket

I couldn’t get to the bathroom to take a picture of the new drywall but I tried:

Photobucket

Photobucket

I managed to forget to take a picture of the floor that has been torn up at the front door including part of the entry closet, but did take a picture of the dining/kitchen area where portions of the boards have been removed to blend in better when we extend the hardwood into the kitchen.

Photobucket

Now there is of course a thunderstorm going on so who knows if the siding will show up tomorrow or if anything will get done but we will see!
